Stockholm to Porto: Air France A220 European business class

TLDR: Check my reel from the flight.

A few weeks before taking off on our summer trip to Portugal, I checked the SAS app where we had our booking with SAS Plus to Porto. A red message indicated that our flight had been cancel and that I needed to confirm a new suggested flight, which was very similar, departing some tens of minutes differently. I almost pressed okay, but then I saw a small note that stated something like: “or, you are allowed to change your flight”. Interested I clicked, was shown a long list of different flights, both SAS’s own, and their new Sky Team partners such as Air France or KLM. Class wasn’t stated, but I took my chances and chose Air France via Paris instead and crossed my fingers. Moments later a confirmation appeared that our SAS plus tickets had been changed to Air France business class. To add to insult, we could also change our return trip to a SAS flight 2 days later than what we had initially booked.

On departure day, instead of catching the 5 a.m. flight from Copenhagen to Porto, we arrived for our 12 p.m. Air France flight from Stockholm Arlanda. Sky Team flights, except for SAS, still depart from the small and relatively boring Terminal 2 (about to change apparently) – but the lounge was fine for killing an hour with decent food and drink.

Onboard the Air France flight we were welcomed by a very friendly crew. The A220 aircraft is very modern looking and has a convenient 2+3 seating. Seat block is in use in business and we used our blocked middle seat for toys, snacks and plushies as our 1,5 year old was with us on the trip. There is also a clever construction in the back of the seat where you can place your phone or ipad, allowing you to use it as a seat back screen.

After taking off, service begun quite quickly with a round of drinks. We opted for champagne (when in France) and sparkling water, which was served in proper glasses. The champagne on both flights was Pommery, and we had seafood meals on both as well. On Stockholm to Paris it was a slightly weird but still quite nice shredded cod, and on Paris-Porto, above shrimp dish with beans and quinoa. There was also cheese; comté and selles-sur-cher on both flights, and a lemon tarte on one of the flights and a choux craquelin on the other. The cheese and desserts were great. There was also nice fresh bread served from a basket, and generally speaking, and especially compared to other flights I’ve taken in Europe, this was superb.

In Paris we had a two hour stop, and as we had lounge access, we made our way to the Air France lounge. I was there in 2013 and remembered it as great. It still was, with free-flowing champagne, a looong bar (did not order anything, but I presume it was free), plenty of food and French desserts as well as views of the apron and the runway.

We really love Air France’s European business class, especially on the A220, really nice trip. Especially compared to the stuffed SAS plus home from Lisbon on the return leg back to Stockholm.
